REI recommends planning a trip that is "about one-third the usual distance you would travel with your adult counterparts" (REI, n.d., para. 4).

Do you recommend the lake or the river for people who are new to kayaking?

For first time paddlers, we recommend paddling at lake before paddling on a river. This allows a new paddler an opportunity to learn how to maneuver a kayak in calm water without fighting a moving current.

Do you recommend the lake or the river for kids?

It depends on their level of experience in a kayak. If they have paddle before and they are comfortable on water, then we recommend the river. If they are newer to paddling then we recommend the lake.

What is a good length river trip for kids?

We recommend the short trip for younger kids and the medium trip for older adolescence. We never recommend the long trip unless the paddler has paddle multiple times and really enjoys being on the river for 5 or more hours.
